Danny Crawford hosted his annual weekend wagon ride at his Fleming County farm on the Licking River in eastern Kentucky
over the weekend of July 16-17 this year. There was a total of 10 wagons and 13 outriders on hand Saturday morning ready to ride. The day started out kind of foggy with overcast skies, but
the skies cleared as the day went on and there was plenty of sun by late afternoon when we completed the riding for the day. We followed the same route as in other years, but the overcast skies
kept the temperatures down and made for a fast pace and left plenty of time for stopping and socializing. When we got back to the farm, there was an excellent meal ready for everyone.
The meal included a hog donated and cooked by Danny's Amish friends and neighbors. They also provided homemade ice cream for dessert. The meal was followed by bluegrass
music played by local recording star Robert Wright and his friends.
Sunday dawned a little foggy, but the fog burned off quickly and there was bright sunshine the entire day. Several of
those in attendance packed up after breakfast and headed home. Once the smoke cleared, there were only 2 wagons with 4 riders in each wagon along with 4 outriders on hand to ride on Sunday.
We crossed over into Bath County and rode about 10 miles down to Ermas Dairy Bar in Owingsville for lunch. (I'd give Erma's a 9.5/10 rating for excellent food at a very reasonable price!)
We then proceeded to ride a loop back to Danny's farm with a stop at the "swinging bridge" in Wyoming, Ky. It was there that one of our young riders learned that it was not a good idea in
this group to leave his horse stand while he went off to play. (You'll have to view the photos to see what I'm referring to.) We got back to the farm about 5:30 in the afternoon and a couple
or us stayed overnight to help with the cleanup before heading home on Monday morning. It was a really great week with Homer Rader's wagon train followed by Danny's ride. I'm already
looking forward to doing it again in 2017!
